Highlights Of The Month: April 2017

This month, from travelling to Jordan for one of my best friend’s weddings, collaborating with Egyptian PR company Flare PR on a desert inspired shoot in Cairo and heading to Marrakech for one of my best friend’s hen do’s, read on for my highlights of the month.

Thank God for these monthly round-ups or I don’t think I would have any idea where I am or what I’m doing, let alone what month it is! I’ve always been a fan of taking stock of the moments and events in our lives, I’ve found doing so is super useful both in terms of being present as well as as some sort of indication of the progress. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in “next, next, next!!” that sometimes it’s important to be like “okay cool, what’s been happening?” as opposed to simply looking ahead all the time. I’ve started keeping two diaries: one is a 5 year memory book where you write a couple of sentences per day, the other is called the ‘5 minute journal’ and encourages you to write in it morning and night, with a focus on gratitude. I guess this is another diary of sorts, and thank you all for reading it!

‘Jewels’ Ballet at the Royal Opera House

Last month, I joined Cointreau for an awesome rehearsal of new ballet ‘Jewels’ at the Royal Opera House. I enjoyed the rehearsal so much, that I bought some tickets for the show, which I attended this month with two of my best friends. Fifty years old this year, ‘Jewels’ was the first ballet performance I’ve ever watched and I absolutely loved it. Three contrasting ballets, the night was supremely hypnotising and entertaining, filled with HOW IN THE… awestruck moments. Check out The Independent’s review of the ballet here.

Shooting with Sammi Swar and David Wallace

I’ve shot with photographer Sammi Swar before on a number of occasions, including for Nike’s Beautiful x Powerful campaign which I collaborated on with one of my best friend’s, Julie B of Frenchionista. This month, I spent the day at the Barbican where I shot with Sammi Swar and photographer David Wallace. We got some super cool shots, which I’ve been sharing on Instagram. Click here to follow me on Instagram if you’re not already.

Tinie Tempah’s ‘Youth’ Pop Up Launch

Arguably one of the biggest artist’s the UK music scene has offered up in recent years, this month Tinie Tempah launched his third album ‘Youth’, which he marked with a three-day pop-up-shop in East London dedicated to all the things which made up his youth, namely, fried chicken from Morley’s and an N64. “This pop-up will take you on a journey through snapshots of my life. So I’ve put everything in there from a barbershop, similar to one my Dad used to own when I was a kid, and a Nintendo 64 as I used to spend hours in my bedroom playing GoldenEye with my friends,” Tinie said in an interview.

I parked myself in front of the N64 for the entirety of the evening, playing game after game of Mario Kart which, if I do say so myself, I am the best at after spending disproportionately more than 10,000 hours playing over the course of my lifetime. Yup, challenge me to a game of Mario Kart if you don’t believe me. Check out my review and interview with Tinie ahead of his 2013 album ‘Demonstration’ here.

The Dead Sea, Jordan

Wedding season is seemingly upon us! I flew to the Dead Sea in Jordan to celebrate one of my best friend’s weddings. My first time in Jordan, I was awestruck by the beauty of the dead sea, and of one of the wonder’s of the world: Petra! Between the dead sea mud, literally floating in the sea (buoyed by all the salt!), checking out one of the wonder’s of the world and seeing my best friend beaming from ear to ear and looking unbelievably stunning on her wedding day, it was an incredible week.

Shooting with Flare PR in Cairo, Egypt

With Cairo only a short hour flight away from Jordan, I took the opportunity to pass through my hometown to visit my grandfather and my friends and family. While in Cairo, I spent the day (an extremely hot 40 degree celsius!! day) shooting in Wadi Rum, a protected site which features the most gorgeous stretch of desert and granite rock. For the shoot, I collaborated with Egyptian PR company Flare PR, who work with some incredible Egyptian brands the likes of The King’s Mother, Dina Shaker, jazzy and Gamila Official. I’ll be sharing the shots in a blog post soon!

Discovering Over Under Coffee

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll likely have seen that I am completely and utterly obsessed with matcha. Having spent an incredible two months in LA earlier this year, home of the matcha, I’ve come back to London foaming at the mouth and in search of some of that good good to get me through the days. Enter Over Under Coffee which has opened in Earls Court, just around the corner from where I live! With seriously yummy matcha and chai lattes as well as the usual coffee house offerings, made with pride, and a food menu that features healthy and yummy things like peanut butter jelly sandwiches, avocado on toast and etc, it’s my new absolute favourite find.

Chuck Taylor All Star x Nike Flyknit Launch

This month, Chuck Taylor All Star and Nike Flyknit collaborated with JD Sports and UK rapper Yungen on a party to celebrate the launch of their new kicks. Both Converse’s Chuck Taylor (debuted in 1917) and Nike’s Flyknit have become athleisure staples, so perhaps it’s only natural that the two brands (Converse was acquired by Nike in 2003) have collaborated to launch a hybrid style. Available in 6 colours, the unisex shoe combines the high-top silhouette of the Chuck with Nike’s signature woven Flyknit upper. I love love the red and blue pairs in particular!

Marrakech, Morocco for Rox’s bachelorette

One of my best friend’s is getting maaaarried end of May and for her bachelorette, myself and 8 of her other homies headed to Marrakech to celebrate. Rox’s hen was the first I’ve attended, let alone been tasked with helping to organise, and I had the most incredible time helping put together the itinerary and organising. I’ll be writing up the best things we saw / ate and etc in our whirlwind time in Marrakech, coming to alyamooro.com soon! I’m Rox’s brand ambassador for her Goldie Rox jewellery line, check out the images and my post on being an authentic brand ambassador here.

I also read The Good Immigrant – According to its editor, Nikesh Shukla, ‘The Good Immigrant’ is an exploration of what it means to be a “person of colour” in Britain today. A tall order, but with a variety of different experiences and voices collated and expertly delivered by 21 BAME writers the likes of Wei Ming Kam, Kieran Yates and Chimene Suleyman, it’s a supremely interesting and thought-provoking read, bringing into the light, as The Guardian writes, “a British national culture trapped in a post-imperial state of nostalgia.” The book was crowned Britain’s favourite book of 2016, a title well-worth the acclaim. Check out Buzzfeed’s pick of 21 powerful quotes from the book here.
