There’s nothing like a bit of animal print, patent leather, sky high platforms and a waist-belt to make you feel like a badass.
I’m a big believer in dressing for your body shape. There are some things other people can wear that I just can’t get away with, and I’m okay with that. Uber long, skinny legs and the multitude of fashions that require said uber long, skinny legs are just not things I’m ever going to be able to pull off wearing, and that’s something that made me very sad and self-conscious when I was younger. So much so, I basically never wore skirts or anything that showed off my legs, and I still tend to lean towards trousers when getting dressed. That said, a pair of patent black tights can go a long way to dispelling my discomfort, and I love how they look, plus, along the way I’ve figured out what sorts of things suit me.
I love wearing things like high waisted, wide legged trousers with a crop top or bralet, or anything really that emphasises the waist because that, is something that I do have. The waist is actually having quite the moment, between all the waist-trainers the likes of the Kardashians like to advertise (and subsequent images they like to post of their teensy waists and big behinds) and all the exercises doing the rounds promising said small waist. For Fall/Winter 2017 designers have embraced the return of the hourglass shape, with lots of power dressing and nipped-in waists.
Enter the waist-belt: my new love. I got this one from River Island and I love the corset feel it has to it. I’ve worn it to toughen up all sorts of outfits including an all-in-one lycra body suit which looked infinitely cooler after the upgrade.

Here, I wore the belt over a tucked-in animal print t-shirt from Drifter and a patent black leather mini skirt. I also rocked what are potentially one of my favourite pairs of shoes of all time because they give you the height and leg-lengthening wonder that a pair of heels does, without being horrifically uncomfortable and looking like you’re super done up. I kind of feel that, you know? Like wearing heels looks like you’re making looaaadsss of effort. Maybe it’s the tomboy in me and I know that because if I do wear a pair of heels I’m going to be so uncomfortable the whole night that it *would* be me making loooadss of effort. Anyway, I love them. And I think they look cool.
