TLC are back! Well, kinda. Can you believe it?! The iconic group behind the likes of ‘No Scrubs’ and ‘Waterfalls’ (but I didn’t need to tell you that… right?… RIGHT!?) touched down in London this month and I had the opportunity to watch them live and in technicolour and it was just as brilliant as the 12-year-old me could have imagined. I also had a super intense Barry’s Bootcamp class with Beats By Dre to celebrate their new studio opening, relaunched The Come Up and more…
Stormzy at the 02, Brixton
He’s kinda killing it, this guy. Stormzy dropped his debut album last month and quickly became the UK’s most promising, fastest rising and all ’round most deserving artist. ‘Gang Signs And Prayers’ almost instantly topped the charts at number one (a feat *sadly* almost unheard of for a grime artist) and the gigs quickly sold out, one by one. I managed to get my hands on some tickets for one of his hometown shows and boy was it powerful. Bringing out everyone from grime legend Ghetts to Ed Sheeran (with whom he collaborated on a remix for Ed’s ‘Shape Of You), Stormzy made the whole crowd vibrate with pride and belt out word for perfect word. Genuinely super excited to see what’s next for him, I have no doubt he’s set to be a superstar.
BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour
I’ve been doing quite a bit of radio stuff these days and I’m really enjoying it! This month I was invited on to the ubiquitous BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour to discuss the persistent stereotype of the “crazy” ex-girlfriend. I wrote some words and shared the link to listen back here.
TLC at Tiffany & Co.
I think my friend Eniola and I legit cried while watching TLC take to the stage at Tiffany & Co’s event, put together to celebrate the launch of the jewellery brand’s new collection. I’ve been to a looot of these kinds of things, I’ve also been to a looot of gigs where people actually spend money to buy tickets to watch people they supposedly care about take to the stage and I’ve kind of gotten used to the fact that the London crowd is one that’s supremely difficult to impress; people don’t really seem to get that excited about anything. Other than TLC, apparently. People (me included!) were jostling for position long before T-Boz and Chilli took to the stage, and it turned into karaoke vibes almost instantly. Chilli hasn’t aged a day! And the songs are still classics — you know, just in case you’re not already still listening to them. Their new album is out next month!
Barry’s Bootcamp with Beats By Dre
I tried out a Barry’s Bootcamp session while in LA a few months ago and it simultaneously felt like I barely made it out alive and that I could fly, all in one. I guess I’ve kind of been shying away from giving it another go since getting back to London, but when my friends over at Beats By Dre invited me down for a class to celebrate the launch of Barry’s new studio space in West London, I covered my eyes and accepted the invite. I’m glad I did but ohmygodddd does it ever get any easier?
Marie Claire Future Shapers Live
Cointreau invited me down to attend Marie Claire’s Future Shapers Live all-day event in London this month. From a super insightful talk from life coach and author Jen Sincero on moneymoneymonaay to a talk on how best to build your online brand and more, it was a very interesting day filled with useful advice. They also had a wellbeing area and a beauty lounge! Well worth the ticket price. Check out Marie Claire’s rundown of what went down here.
On The Panel at Fashion Industry Insiders
This month I also made my first appearance on a live panel at Fashion Industry Insiders. I joined an inspirational cast which included a fashion illustrator, a photographer, stylist and more to give some insight into the fashion industry. Was pretty nerve wracking but I very much enjoyed the experience!
My Best Friend’s Wedding
I guess it’s safe to say wedding season is well and truly upon us. This month one of my best friend’s got married in what was hands down the coolest wedding I’ve ever been to slash ever will go to in my whole entire life. Themed on Soho House’s newly launched Soho Farm House, the wedding featured the most gorgeous handmade tree chandeliers, edible candles which dripped beef wax and a gorgeous set of bridesmaids dresses (of which I was one!) which the bride, with the help of her super talented sister, made herself! Incredible.
The Come Up
Last but not least, this month saw the return of The Come Up – a hip hop and RnB club / networking night I run with one of my best friends. This was our first TCU in a year (!) and we had such an incredible response to the relaunch; we hit capacity within hours of opening our doors and were buzzing with good vibes and good music. Follow us on Instagram @thecomeuphq for details of our next event.
