Hi, I’m Alya Mooro. I’m a writer, author and creative producer. I was born in Cairo, raised in London, and have spent much of my life somewhere in between. I’ve always been interested in the ways our identities are shaped by the worlds we inhabit, the expectations placed upon us, and the stories we tell ourselves and each other.

In 2019, I published my first book, The Greater Freedom: Life as a Middle Eastern Woman Outside the Stereotypes. Part memoir, part cultural commentary, it explores the complexities of growing up as an Arab woman in the diaspora, and what it means to define a life on your own terms. Following its release, Glamour named me a “Nu-Gen Feminist to Know,” which was pretty wild, and very flattering.

Over the years, I've written for publications including Vogue Arabia, The Telegraph, Harper's Bazaar Arabia, Grazia and VICE, covering everything from culture and identity to relationships, art and the complexities of being human. I also write The Greater Conversation, my newsletter where I think out loud about life, creativity and whatever else happens to be on my mind.

More recently, I've expanded my work beyond the written word. I'm a co-host of Call Her Binti, a podcast exploring culture, media and womanhood, and a creative producer on In Our Thousands, a documentary following two sisters challenging beauty standards in Egypt. I'm also working on my second book, a novel.

I have a BA in Sociology and Psychology and a Master's in Journalism, which probably explains my endless curiosity about people, why we do the things we do, and the stories we construct to make sense of it all.

I've long believed that it's easier to be yourself if you can see yourself. That belief has shaped much of my work, and continues to inform the stories I choose to tell.
